Interview
Q 12:  What's next for you and the Rover missions?

A 12:
I'm working on the Mars Surveyor 2001 project, a much more ambitious project to another location on Mars, where we're planning that the Rover will last many months, and travel many kilometers. The design is evolving, but it would likely be a larger Rover, more capable, with robotic arms, and it would be able to go off into the distance and leave the Lander alone. That would be a logical extension of what we've done here in Pathfinder. One of the goals with the future mission would be to identify rocks and minerals that would be of interest to take back to Earth. And we'd want to actually drill holes in rocks and take core samples for a future return mission. That's what's in the works. It's very exciting.
